1903: Fripp Heirs Sell Island to New Yorker

by Page Putnam Miller

(This is the second in a series of articles about Fripp Island's past. Page Miller, a resident and historian who is writing a book on the history of Fripp, will coordinate the series and be one of the major contributors.)

In 1903 Eula Prioleau, whose deceased husband was the grandson of William and Sarah Harriet Reynolds Fripp, sold Fripp Island for $2,000 to James G. McLoughlin of New York City. The one-page, hand written document for this transaction is the oldest existing deed for the sale of Fripp Island in the Beaufort County Court House. It refers to the island as "commonly called Fripps Island," and describes the boundaries as Fripps Inlet, the Atlantic Ocean, Skulls Inlet, and "a back creek" which is now known as Old House Creek.
James McLoughlin was a wealthy New York publisher. His family owned McLoughlin Brothers, a firm that specialized in publishing religious and children's books. Following McLoughlin's death in 1918, an "Estates Appraised" notice appeared in the New York Times that gave his home address as 13 East Sixty-fifth Street, a fashionable area in close proximity to John. D. Rockefeller's home.
One can only speculate about how James McLoughlin happened to buy Fripp. There was considerable interest at this time among wealthy northerners in acquiring hunting preserves in the South. National prosperity and the expanding railroad made it possible for the Rockefeller, Carnegie, Macy, Pulitzer, and Morgan families to build extravagant houses on secluded barrier islands in close proximity to their scenic hunting grounds. One of the most noted private preserves was the Jekyll Island Club in Georgia established in 1888.
Only a few months after purchasing Fripp Island, McLoughlin made a hunting expedition to his newly acquired preserve. His handsome steam yacht, the Trionyx, docked in Beaufort in early December 1903 after sailing from New York. The Beaufort Gazette reported that the large and beautiful private yacht had only its crew aboard and that her owner "is expected here in the near future with a party to enjoy hunting on his preserves, which are located on Fripp and Story Islands." McLoughlin's hunting party included friends from New York and his two sons as well as a local guide, John N. Wallace, one of Beaufort's most experienced sportsmen. Accompanying the party was a pack of local hunting dogs. During the stay in Beaufort, the McLoughlin party sailed to Fripp aboard the Tryonix several times. They returned from the first trip with eight deer, and on the next expedition they shot seven. According to the Beaufort Gazette, McLoughlin was "quite a favorite" with all who met him.
Following McLoughlin's death, his widow, Cornelia Cole McLoughlin, inherited Fripp Island and owned it until her death in 1932. Thus Fripp Island continued, as it had during much of the post-Civil War period, to have an owner who did not live nearby and who visited infrequently, if ever. An absentee landlord allowed the local folks who had the time and a seaworthy boat to make recreational use of Fripp Island's beach and woodland preserve.

Nominees for the Board

By Kate Hines, CMCA, AMS, MCM

Soon after you receive this issue of The Trawler, if you are a member of the Association in good standing, you will receive a ballot for election of Directors to the Fripp Island Property Owners Association Board. Ballots were mailed on March 3, 2006. A Member has only one vote, regardless of the number of properties owned. Where there are two or more owners of a single property, only one owner can exercise the voting right of the property.

The Nominating Committee has selected six nominees for the election of three to the Board, Class of 2009. When you receive your ballot, you may vote for one, two or three of the nominees indicated.

Resumés for the six candidates are printed here. The Nominating Committee asked each candidate the same questions so that you may weigh each answer equally. The Board would like to thank the Nominating Committee - Chair, Mary Cantley and members Tom Hunter, Budd Catlin, Joe DeVore, P.J. Fineis, Larry Geohagan, and Bill Merritt.

ROBERT G. DAVIDSON

Bob and Jane Davidson have owned property on Fripp since 1978. They live in Columbia, South Carolina and try to spend one week per month on Fripp. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
Bob received his BA from Davidson College and his MBA from UNC at Chapel Hill. He was in commercial banking in North Carolina and Virginia until 1975, concentrating in marketing and product management. Bob has since been in the trust end of the banking business with South Carolina National Bank and Wachovia Bank. He retired in 1997.

Fripp Island Activities: Bob served on the Club Advisory Board for two terms, ending in 2005; the CAB accomplishments during that time culminated in a newly furnished exercise facility. He is currently a member of the Finance Committee.

Volunteer Involvement: Bob has served as Treasurer of the following organizations: Historic Columbia Foundation; South Carolina State Museum; and Society of the Cincinnati in Georgia. He has served as President of the South Carolina Archives and History Foundation; and the International Association of Financial Planning for South Carolina. Bob has served on the Hammond School Board and is a members of the Board of Directors of the Riverbanks Zoo

What is your long-term vision of Fripp Island? Fripp Island should be a wonderful place to own property, to live, and to visit. Resident and non-resident owners will find a way to make this happen! The developer will become less visible as the Island becomes more and more self-sufficient. In other words, if everyone gets along, the Island will do well. Planned meetings between Resort management and FIPOA to discuss where we've been and where we're going will help. Uncontrolled growth should not be allowed. The FIPOA and the FIPSD will need to work together more closely.

What do you wish to accomplish as an FIPOA Board member? Always work toward making the above long-term vision a reality. Use the financial resources of the FIPOA responsibly. It is better to have ample resources in the bank to adequately maintain and improve the Island's infrastructure. There is nothing wrong with coming under budget and putting the surplus in a contingency fund.

Considering only those areas the FIPOA is responsible for, what aspects of island management are "going well"? What do you see as FIPOA strengths? The Island's property owners are its strength. Working together, these owners can continue to keep FIPOA's responsibilities well covered.

In your opinion, what aspects of island management need change or further work and what would you recommend? The Island needs to create a reasonable financial reserve for major repairs and POA assets upkeep of roads, bridges. The current plan probably needs to become more comprehensive. The lagoons need more attention so that they become real assets of the Island.

What Committee assignments would be of interest to you? Finance; Trawler Editorial group.

CAROLE FAHEY

Carole and Ed Fahey have owned property on Fripp since 1999. They reside in Greenwich, Rhode Island and spend between 30 to 40% of their time on Fripp. Between them, Carole and Ed have 6 children and 5 grandchildren.
Carole has a B.A. from the University of Connecticut and participated in graduate studies at George Washington University. She has been a real estate broker, developed sales and marketing programs for condominium developers, and has owned a Crabtree & Evelyn store in Rhode Island since 1980. The first store was in Providence; her current store is in Cranston.

Fripp Island Activities: Carole is a member of the Fripp Island Women's Club, and the Fripp Island Women's Golf Association.

Volunteer Involvement: In Rhode Island, Carole is on her church vestry and is a member of the Altar Guild, and was on a search committee for clergy. At the Potowomut Golf Club, Carole was the Ladies League Treasurer for 3 years; Ladies League President for 2 years; and was a member of the search committee for a new golf professional. She coordinated in-state matches and served on the Rules Committee for the Rhode Island Women's Golf Association. She has served as a member the Board of Directors of the Nordic Inn Condo Association in Lincoln, New Hampshire and was on the Board during the reconstruction of 32 units after they were damaged by arson.

What is your long-term vision of Fripp Island? Maintaining the quality of the unique coastal lifestyle that drew all of us here.

What do you wish to accomplish as an FIPOA Board member? To serve in an intelligent, unbiased, and agenda-free manner.

Considering only those areas that the FIPOA is responsible for, what aspects of island management are "going well"? What do you see as FIPOA strengths? They all seem to be going well.

In your opinion, what aspects of island management need change or further work and what would you recommend? Better signage and enforcement about not feeding the deer. Better information to renters and visitors about the proximity to alligators and danger to themselves and the animals by feeding them.

What Committee assignments would be of interest to you? Appeals; Human Resources; Security.

JOSEPH W. GANNON, JR.

Joe and Jane Gannon have owned property on Fripp Island since 1992 and finished construction of their home in 2001. They live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and spend 2 to 3 months each year on Fripp. They have three sons.
Joe received an AB in Economics from BostonCollege and received his law degree from the Law School at Boston College. He had a 33-year career as Senior Legal Counsel with Exxon Mobil Corporation, working in New York; Brussels; Houston; New Jersey and Virginia. He retired in 2005. During his career, he served on various committees of the American Bar Association and American Petroleum Institute.

Fripp Island Activities/Involvement: Joe is a member of the Fripp Island Men's Golf Association and the Fripp Island Yacht Club. He attends various community and Club events when he is on the Island.

What kind of volunteer organizations have you been involved in and what were your responsibilities: Joe was a member of the Board of Governors of the Lowes Island Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Virginia, and served as Golf Chair there. He also served for various committees of the United Way while in Washington, DC and on the St. James Parish Council and its committees while in Basking Ridge, NJ. He is currently training to be a mediator in the Chapel Hill area.

What is your long-term vision of Fripp Island? I am interested in seeing Fripp Island continue to retain its quiet island beauty at the same time it affords owners and visitors quality amenities and a "getaway" living experience on the Island. The balance between our pristine environment and commercial development on the Island will always be an issue behind the scenes, but I will work so that Fripp remains an island free of excess development and commercialism.

What do you wish to accomplish as an FIPOA Board Member? Maintain and upgrade the Island infrastructure overseen by the FIPOA in a spirit of cost-consciousness that Fripp residents and non-residents see as value-driven, sensible, and sustainable.

Considering only the areas the FIPOA is responsible for, what aspects of island management are "going well"? What do you see as FIPOA strengths? Having had the opportunity to live on the Island for much of 2005, I have been impressed with the administration of the Island by various FIPOA committees and staff. I have also been impressed with the great strides in communication between FIPOA and the Fripp residents and non-residents, evidenced by periodic e-mails, The Trawler, open meetings, and the informative website. Security on the Island is visible and therefore effective, and maintenance of the roads and bridges appear to be planned and implemented well.

In your opinion, what aspects of the island management need change or further work and what would you recommend? Working with the Resort owner to improve the "first impression" of the Island as you drive in and around is needed, and probably requires only a small re-allocation of budget funds. This would also serve to enhance property values. We need to continue to improve the working relationship between the Resort owner and the FIPOA. It's never easy, and the rapport appears to be better than before; it's an ongoing need.

What committee assignment would be of interest to you? Appeals; Covenants; Finance; Human Resources; Off-Island Affairs; and Security.

ROBERT NEWBY

Bob and Judy Newby have been married for 47 years, and have owned property on Fripp for ten years. They live in Hillsboro, Ohio and spend approximately six months of the year on the Island. The Newbys have 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
Bob attended Southern State College. He worked for Davon, Inc. for 40 years and held several positions including Design and construction coordinator, Operations manager, Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer. Bob retired in 2001.

Fripp Island Activities: Bob is a member of the MGA and the Fripp Island Yacht Club. He is a past member of the FIPOA Beautification Committee. He co-chaired Make-a-Difference Day in 2005 and will serve as Chair for this event in 2006. He also served on the steering committee of the Fripp Owners Club.

Volunteer Involvement: Bob is a former member of the Ohio Jaycees and a current member of the Elks and Past Exalted Ruler. He served as a Director of the Ohio Aggregates Association for seven years and as a Director of Highland County Family YMCA, overseeing construction of a new facility in 2001-2002. Bob is a former President of the Highland Swim Club. He is Deacon in the Hillsboro Presbyterian Church with 50-year plus membership.

What is your long-term vision of Fripp Island? My long-term vision and goal for Fripp is to maintain its simplicity and quality of life. I envision Fripp continuing to grow, which will require good planning and input from the FIPOA to maintain and improve our exceptional quality of life, friendly atmosphere, and great natural beauty.

What do you wish to accomplish as an FIPOA Board member? Support building assets in the long-term Capital Improvement Fund within the overall budget, particularly to repave streets after new sewer line construction is completed. Support policies that address concerns of both residents and non-residents. Work with the Board to continue improvements of common property and the beauty of the Island, which raises property values and the quality of life on Fripp.

Considering only those areas the FIPOA is responsible for, what aspects of island management are "going well"? What do you see as FIPOA strengths? I feel the transfer of many responsibilities from FIPOA Directors to a General Manger has been very harmonious and has improved management by the FIPOA. The website is great, and keeps all property owners up to date and informed on many Fripp issues and events. This feature, along with the telecommunications system, demonstrates the dedication of the FIPOA to give all property owners input and information.

In your opinion, what aspects of island management need change or further work and what would you recommend? I am delighted with the softening of the Security Department's image and approach. I would like to see this policy continued while maintaining strong security deterrent against vandalism, adolescent mischief, and occasional crime. Continued improvement of common property and beautification projects. Continue very close relations with the Resort. We need good management from the Fripp Resort and FIPOA to protect and enhance property values and enjoyable living on Fripp.

What Committee assignments would be of interest to you? Finance; Roads & Drainage; Security.

ALLAN K. PRICE

Allan and Susan Price have owned property on Fripp Island since 1985. They live in Marietta, Georgia and spend over half the year on Fripp. They have 2 children and 5 grandchildren.
Allan received both his BA in Mathematics and his MBA from Appalachian State University. He has had a 33-year career in telecommunications (Southern Bell & BellSouth) focusing primarily in the areas of Marketing and External Affairs. He retired from BellSouth in 2002 as Assistant Vice President of Regulatory and External Affairs.

Fripp Island Activities/Involvement: Allan is a member of the Fripp Island Men's Golf Association and the Fripp Island Yacht Club. He attends Wednesday evening vespers and supports Fripp Club and social activities.

What kind of volunteer organizations have you been involved in and what were your responsibilities: Allan served as President of the homeowners association in his current Atlanta neighborhood and has served as board member of other homeowners association. He held a leadership role at BellSouth for United Way fund raising activities. He has coached youth sports programs.

What is your long-term vision of Fripp Island? To see Fripp continue to grow and be developed in a way that maintains the serenity and natural beauty that most of us sought when we came here.

What do you wish to accomplish as an FIPOA Board member? Fairly represent the interests of all non-resident members in decisions made by the Board

Considering only those areas the FIPOA is responsible for, what aspects of island management are "going well"? What do you see as FIPOA strengths? The parks have been wonderfully improved. Paved roads and bridges are adequately maintained. Security is well managed overall.

In your opinion, what aspects of island management need change or further work and what would you recommend? Better maintenance of gravel roads; parking for beach accesses; control of speeding - especially along Dolphin Road; attention to Beach cleanliness.

What Committee assignments would be of interest to you? Appeals; Covenants; Roads & Drainage.

BARBARA ANN SEALEY

Barbara and Bryan Sealey have owned property on Fripp Island since 1995. They were full-time residents for six years, but now live in Spartanburg, South Carolina and spend 3 to 4 months a year on the Island. They have 2 children and 1 grandchild.
Barbara attended Miami of Ohio and the University of California at Santa Barbara. She worked as a police officer for 8 years; a director of property management (commercial) for 10 years; and office administrator for 5 years.

Fripp Island Activities/Involvement: Barbara's past activities include membership in the Women's Club, where she served as Vice President, and the FI Women's Golf Association. She served for 4 years on the Ocean Creek Homeowner's Association Board of Directors, and was Vice President for 2 of those years. Barbara has served on the following FIPOA committees: Security Committee, Crossover Committee, Appeals Committee, Rules & Regulations Committee, Parking Committee, and Davis Love Park Committee. Barbara served on the FIPOA Board of Directors for 4 months in 2002.

What kind of volunteer organizations have you been involved in and what were your responsibilities: Barbara served as the President of North Mecklenburg High School PTA; volunteered for the Huntersville Elementary PTA; is a volunteer tutor for the Spartanburg County Children's Shelter.

What is your long-term vision of Fripp Island? My long-term vision of Fripp Island is that of a close-knit island community that is fun yet safe for families, with its "Lowcountry" charm and beauty and quality amenities. The FIPOA role will be critical in maintaining this. It will be less of a resort atmosphere and more of a residential one; more balanced. The relationship between the FIPOA and the Fripp Resort would have to remain very positive with open lines of communication.

What do you wish to accomplish as an FIPOA Board member? I would focus on continuing to improve communication between the Board and owners, and ensuring that everyone's voice is heard. Because of more real estate transactions, communication and involvement with new owners should be a priority. Being a good listener and keeping an open mind so we can always do our best is what I hope for.

Considering only those areas the FIPOA is responsible for, what aspects of island management are "going well"? What do you see as FIPOA strengths? I consider Security, bridges, lagoons and the Davis Love Park and Audubon Park as the FIPOA strengths.

In your opinion, what aspects of island management need change or further work and what would you recommend? I believe that we need to focus on infrastructure issues more. Roads and bike paths need further work. It is very challenging to maintain 31 beach accesses, so I would recommend a study on how we can reduce the costs of what options we have (do all 31 have to open?) I would also recommend changes to the gate operation. Another area I would suggest more focus on is environmental issues.

What committee assignments would be of interest to you? Off Island Affairs; Security.

Splinters from the Board

by Kate Hines, General Manager
  • The Nominating Committee was appointed and tasked with preparing a list of nominees for the Board, Class of 2009. All nominees for this class year must be non-resident owners. The Committee submitted a list of six nominees. You may read the resumes of the nominees elsewhere in this issue.

  • The FIPOA Rules and Regulations Schedule of Violations and Fees was updated. Fees for violating certain rules such as underage driving of a golf cart were increased for better compliance and enforcement. The update can be read online at http://www.fipoa.org/rules.html.

  • The Board approved the capital purchase of a gas powered 4X4 golf cart/utility vehicle for $10,900. The cart will replace one leased security vehicle. The 2006 Security Budget line item for vehicle lease was reduced by $5,900.

  • The Reserve Committee, a subcommittee of the Finance Committee, met twice to discuss options for determining proper amounts to set aside for long-term needs of the Island. A certified Reserve Specialist will make a presentation for creating a reserve study at the March Board meeting.

  • The pipes under Porpoise Drive at the Fripp Inlet have been replaced. The front entry of the island has been redesigned and replanted. The POA web calendar is listing events from all on-Island groups. To add something, contact the POA office or go on-line to http://www.fipoa.org/cgi-bin/calendar/calendar.pl.

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor of the Trawler:
So many Fripp Island friends of Rita and me have extended their sympathies, and donated to the Franciscan Center in memory of Rita. Since the funeral, I have tried to personally to thank those who have sent donations and Mass remembrance but, due to what has to be a continuing stupor, I have undoubtedly failed to acknowledge everyone. The Trawler gives me the opportunity to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. I am so glad that I live on Fripp Island.
Sincerely,
Jim Purcell

THE TRAWLER welcomes brief (a maximum of 250 words), factual and temperate letters from its readers. Only original letters, signed with the writer's name, address and telephone number, will be considered for publication. Letters are subject to editing, condensation and republishing in any format. All letters submitted become the property of THE TRAWLER. Publication does not imply agreement by FIPOA of views expressed. Regretfully, we cannot account for unpublished letters.

Donations Needed for the Deer Program

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is administering the deer fertility control program. The HSUS is a charitable group, its sole source of income being donations. In 2004, we raised a substantial amount from Island property owners, all of which went directly to HSUS to help defer cost. As helpful as the donation were, the money was exhausted some time ago, and HSUS alone has been funding the project since.
Since Fripp property owners are the ultimate beneficiaries of this program, now is the time for us to show our gratitude to HSUS, and help ensure the successful completion of this program.
Mail donations to: FIPOA, 225 Tarpon Blvd., Fripp Island, SC 29920. Please make your check to: "HSUS", and note in the Memo section: "Fripp Deer."

Audubon Club Program Features Hunting Island Ranger

by Arlene Jacquette

At the January meeting of the Audubon Club, 50 residents heard interpretive ranger Laurel Weeks outline new developments at Hunting Island, State Park. The first phase of the $8.3 million sand renourishment project--to start soon--is expected to result in a 100-foot-wide beach at high tide.

Hunting Island is also expanding its land holdings to 8 small islands totaling 11.7 acres. Ms. Weeks showed photos of the hummocks, which are located in the marsh between the Harbor River and Hunting Island, and noted plans to add guided kayaking trips to these sites as part of the Park's programs. She pointed out that the schedule of the Park's daily programs can be accessed at www.discoversouthcarolina.com, and the Adult Nature Series will take place in March.

Two initiatives funded by the Friends organization (www.friends-of-hunting-island-sc.org) will be implemented this spring, according to the ranger. A classroom will be built at the Nature center and a model "backyard habitat" will be created at the Visitor Center's pond.

Ms. Weeks reported on Hunting Island's banner year for turtle nests. She also mentioned that the S.C. Forestry Commission is conducting a study to determine the cause of the die-off of the park's red bay trees.

The Hunting Island ranger ended her informative talk by recounting her experience at the recent necropsy of a pregnant female dolphin on the Fripp beach by stranding expert, Dr. Al Segars (an Audubon speaker in 2005).

Fripp Island Community Centre News

By Dean Pelley

This will be my last President's Message, as my term of office is about to conclude. Eunice Caro and Tony Colucci will also complete their tenures. Many thanks to them and to the remaining members of the Board for their wonderful work and support during this past year. We want to thank all Fripp Island property owners, organizations, and individuals who have responded favorably to the FICC's annual pledge appeal. Your support is important to the operation of these vital facilities.

This year has been extremely busy and productive for the Community Centre and for the Chapel. Accomplishments include completion of the parking lot, adjacent landscaping, and installation of new carpet in the Community Centre, new table linens, 32 additional niches in the Columbarium, expanded library hours, and more library shelf space. We have sponsored replacement of 12 benches on the island, installed a sound barrier between the kitchen and meeting room, sponsored the Dan McCormick concert, returned Family Movie Night, and expanded distribution of the newsletter to include visitors, all the while maintaining our 25 year-old building. Also, we have activated a long-range planning committee.

The next Treasure Sale will be on June 24, 2006. We have several locations to store donations now if you are unable to keep articles until then. Please call any of the following people for pick-up: Dean Pelley, 838-4818, T. Thomas, 838-4136, or Don Aldrich, 838-9149.

GOLF

THE GOLF PRO's CORNER

by Char Cormier

Are you aware of your own body and cues to attention?
Your own cues developed from your own awareness are superior to those of the experts because they relate to your body at your present level of development. No golf book or pro can ever know your body as well as it knows itself.
Chipping on the range today, my attention went naturally to the back of my left hand. As long as I let it rest there, the feedback I received seemed to give me maximum feel about where my leading edge was, and to let me be confident. This doesn't mean that it's my secret for chipping. It's merely what my body finds useful today. I have to be willing to let go of it, and may have to find another focus tomorrow. Just remember golf is about a feeling we have in our bodies and a way of showing our friends we feel terrible.

Fripp Island Women's Golf Association FIWGA - A Full Calendar is Scheduled

By Joyce Zanone

The weather has been beautiful this winter and we have had a good turnout for our Tuesdays. President Kit Griffin started the New Year with a luncheon meeting following golf on January 10th. New members were welcomed, and announcements were made regarding some changes in our calendar this year. The WGA's invitational was February 14th, and a good time was had by all.

The Rally for the Cure tournament is scheduled for April 18th at Ocean Point Golf Course. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation sponsors it. Chairpersons Jane Cuffe and Betty Edmonds invite all golfers, men and women, to participate. Participants can put together their own foursomes if they wish. Rally for the Cure will donate the prize for closest to the pin on a Par 3. Entry fee is a $20 donation and additional donations are appreciated. A luncheon and raffle will follow.

The WGA's Annual Member-Guest Tournament will be Tuesday, May 2nd, at the Ocean Point Golf Course. This year's event will have a Las Vegas theme and you can bet that it will be a fun time for all. Committee members Judy Newby, Dana Whittle, Chris Assaf, Stephanie Weber, Barb Hess and Bev Fineis are excited about their plans and are hopeful they will meet the high standards that have been set before in all the previous Member-Guest tournaments. This event is one of the highlights of the FIWGA year, and the committee encourages all members to mark their calendars, invite their guests and sign up early, so Lady Luck can be on their side. If you have any questions, you may call either chairperson, Judy Newby 838-1438 or Bev Fineis, 838-7143.

There is much more happening with the FIWGA. If you are new to Fripp and want to join in the fun, come on out for Tuesday golf and sign up then. Dues are $40 annually.

Men's Golf Association

By Dick Briggs

The Men's Golf Association is in full swing for an eventful 2006. During January, we added new members each Monday and are hoping for more as new men buy property on Fripp and join the Fripp Island Club. Our MGA group meets each Monday morning. Simply sign up in the MGA book at the Ocean Creek clubhouse by Saturday and come on out and play the following Monday.
At our first fellowship luncheon this year at the Firehouse, we heard from Char Comier, our golf director, Stuart Mitchell, Fripp Island Resort General Manager, and our two Greens Superintendents, Jerry Ross and Kevin Lashley. In March, we are planning another luncheon at the Firehouse featuring Corned Beef and Cabbage.
Many of us will be playing in the Sea Rescue Scramble on Saturday March 11. We are looking forward to a home and home match with Dataw Island MGA on Monday March 20 - here and then Tuesday March 21 - there. In many years of play, we have never beaten the Dataw Team. Our first game in April will be the Annual North - South Challenge. This is a game started by Bill Houseal and John Bidwell and will be followed by cold drinks, lunch and good fellowship as we once again discuss the Civil War.
In April, we will be hosting the Women's Golf Association for good golf and lunch at the Firehouse. When the women attend, we not only have cokes and beer but also wine. In addition, we have had a rash of Holes-In-One recently, nice going to Jack Buckley, Tony Kaduk, Cliff Rhein and Ed Fahey. Please come on out and enjoy our Fripp Island MGA each Monday morning.

Captain's Log
Musings of an Island Vagabond

by Cappy

I've noticed we have some interesting names for things down here on this little spit of land. We don't have swamp, we have marsh. We don't have rats, we have Cotton Voles. We don't have billions of the most vicious biting insects known to mankind, we have "no-see-ums". I don't care what we call them but I know that I still have itching welts on my arms from my first visit here back in 1964.
My personal favorite is the "Palmetto Bug". Now, I'm no insectologist but I bet you could put them under an electron microscope and seek counsel of Nobel Prize Winning entomologist and find that their genetic material matches perfectly with the common brown roach!
I don't want to suggest that we are getting a little high brow here on Fripp, but the fact is we have a lot of bugs, a whole bunch of swamp, no-see-ums with mouths bigger than Ethel Merman's and Joe E. Brown's combined and a whole bunch of other creepy crawler critters.
For my money, that just adds to the charm. I say let them be. We need to call them what they are and learn to live with them. Oh, I've got to go; the pest control man is at my door.

Boating & Fishing

Storms Batter Fishermen, But Fishing Off To a Good Start

by Ralph Goodison

Fishing is off to a good start, but storms slow fishermen. The warm weather this year has made it great time to get out on the water and enjoy our winter fishing. The Fripp Island Marina is making every effort to take marina operations and service to a new high for boaters and fishermen this year. Marina Manager, Lewis Turner, thanks owners and guests for support of the Marina.

Motte Rogers, Harbormaster, recently returned from the South Carolina Tackle show with some of the newest and best fishing tackle available. Mike Brown, Excursions Manager, has again great land and water toys. Water toys include 17' and 21' boats, rented by the day, half day, or by the hour. Kayaks single and tandem, are also available for rent. Excursion Cruises on Fripper, a 40-passenger pontoon boat will include Dolphin, Shelling, Sunset, Nature, Party, and new this year a Pirate cruise, make for a great day on the water. If you have not checked out the marina, look at what it has to offer the fishermen in all of us.

Captain Ralph Shows off his Redfish
Ralph Goodison fishing with Captain Don Kohlmayer ran into a school of Redfish at the tire reef. It took roughly 15 minutes to land and release the beauty that weighed approximately 38 lb.

Old Man of the Bridge

by Ralph Goodison

Bill Thompson started fishing on Fripp Island in 1972 and moved here in 1987. He became "the old man of the bridge" catching fish in good and bad weather.
Pat, Bill's wife, also spends time on the bridge and catches her share of fish.
One of Bill's record fish was caught on Paris island--a 28", nearly 10 lb., Seatrout.
Bill, always pleasant, will help you to learn the tricks to being the (second) best bridge fisherman inthe county.

Fishing Forecast

Inshore: Redfish, Trout and Sheepshead, Good; Whiting and Flounder Showing.
Near Shore: Blackbass, Vermillion, Redfish and Shark, Good; Grouper and Snapper fair.
Offshore: Dolphin, Yellowfin Tuna, Showing; Bluefin Tuna 500 lb range are also are being caught.

Fripp Island Sea Rescue

by Paul Field

For the months of December 2005 and January 2006, our unit received no requests for assistance.

On January 17, a Coast Guard HH-65 helicopter from Air Station Savannah landed at the emergency helipad at Ocean Creek Golf Course for a two-hour training session. Our unit plus several members of the Fripp Island Fire department took part with emphasis on emergency aircraft evacuation procedures. Our regular training program with Coast Guard helicopters in Fripp Inlet continues with possible expansion in the near future to day and night operations.

On March 11, the third annual St. Patrick's Day Golf Tournament was held at Ocean Creek Golf Course. Jointly sponsored with Beaufort Water Search & Rescue, this event is our major fund raising activity and was very successful. Both organizations express their sincere appreciation to our friends and supporters for their help and consideration with special thanks to The Fripp Company, especially Char Cormier and his staff.

To report a marine emergency, call Fripp Island Security at 838-2334 or Beaufort County Dispatch at 9-1-1.
